The way i see most modern tracks is
a beat (kick + percs hihats)
I really like people who program these rather then grab vengeance or loopmasters
then you have your bass synths, these need already to sound phat and crispy solo, but also gell with the drums
then you'll have some leads / plucks / stabs whatever, these will need to bring the emotion
and then you have your fair share of risers/downers/explosions and fx layers to further spice up your percussion. If you feel you need to use these, then you're not able to build enough tension with your core content.
A lot of people might dissagree, but a lot of stuff i hear is form over substance, meaning, the whole shebbang of the right samples, the right presets and the right midi rifs are there, so near perfect execution technically, but the track itself is then F#cking boring, if you knw what I mean, not saying your track is, but YOU should be able to be happy with your track jst trusting your core components, rather than leads and bass being a sorry ass excuse for completing the track.
with ear candy i mean all the whooshes, 8 measure loopmasters/vengeance/nexus FX samples, sidechained built ups, explosions.... you don't need all that crap. The arrangement and melody should speak for itself. Or if you want to use ear candy, make some yourself and use it differently than everybody else.
just some general thoughts here.
